Sterlite Technologies

Client: STERLITE TECHNOLOGIES

Headquartered in India with additional operations in China and Brazil, Sterlite Technologies is one of the global leaders in optical fibres, optical fibre cables, power conductors and HV / EHV power cables. It is also India’s largest private sector power transmission company. Sterlite is developing several network projects across India, including delivering a secure communication network in Jammu & Kashmir for the Indian Army (NFS), enabling BharatNet, establishing urban high-speed fibre to the home (FTTH) networks and multiple interstate, ultra-mega power transmission projects.

Sterlite’s operations within India make it a natural contributor to numerous government missions including Make In India, Digital India, Smart City projects etc. The company’s mission is to connect every home on the planet through both power and telecom, a mission it is keen to drive through every touch point including sustainability and CSR.

THE CHALLENGE: 

To craft a sustainability vision and CSR strategy for Sterlite that builds on the company’s mission to connect every home on the planet, utilises the core expertise of its business verticals, and contributes to the company’s position as a thought leader in its industry and the country. 

THE APPROACH: 

Sterlite and its management have a long-standing culture of investing in social impact projects, supporting women's empowerment and education programmes in Maharashtra as well as funding local development projects close to their offices, plants and projects across the country. 

The project approach was to map all existing CSR and sustainability activity across locations to provide an overview of current practices, successes, challenges and impact. At the same time, we mapped the needs, expectations and desires around sustainability of multiple internal and external stakeholders and business verticals to understand the potential for sustainability to contribute to Sterlite’s business success going forward.

The output was a detailed CSR mapping document and a crafted sustainability vision and strategy that re-imagines the future of Sustainability at Sterlite, drives stakeholder engagement at all levels, and supports the needs and challenges of business verticals and current projects. 

PROJECT STATUS:

Having delivered the mapping analytics and developed a sustainability vision and strategy, we also delivered the CSR section of Sterlite's annual report and are now working on implementing this strategy in the business with a specific focus on employee engagement and communications.
